Leading in a multi-generational workplace

Today, more Americans than ever are working past the traditional age of retirement. According to a 2019 report from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 10.6 million people in the workforce are over age 65. That number is estimated to increase to 13 million by 2024.

Meanwhile, millions of new professionals are entering the workforce every year. Companies must now learn how to manage five different generations in the workplace.

In this episode of “ASCE Interchange,” Muhammad Elgammal, senior civil engineer for Stantec Aviation Group, adjunct professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and a 2017 ASCE New Face of Civil Engineering, discusses how to lead in a multi-generational workplace.

Understanding generational differences is crucial across all industries, but especially in civil engineering. The profession relies on effective collaboration, regardless of position or seniority. It comes down to recognizing individuals’ skills and experiences and using them strategically.

“Each generation functions within its own set of values, culture, and definitions of success. So, when we can align them under an umbrella of a company or even more so a profession, we stand to succeed. And when we succeed, so does the public that we serve,” said Elgammal.

He also discusses the transition to virtual connection and remote work resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
